End of Semester Meeting

December 13th // 5:00 pm

Our last meeting of Fall semester! We will be meeting in the Fine Arts Building at 5:00 pm. We will have snacks and chat about ideas for future activities and events, including tours, trips, exhibitions, presentations, collaborations, etc.

Virtual Snapshot: Scholarly Communication in Art Librarianship

November 14th // 7:30 pm

Join the Society of Art Librarianship Students (SALS) for a webinar watch party! We will be streaming the ARLIS/NA & ACRL Arts webinar on Scholarly Communication in Art Librarianship. The discussion will illuminate the range of scholarly activities that art and visual resources professionals are engaging in, and will address the process of preparing a research agenda, participating in presentations, or finding alternate avenues in which to engage in scholarly discourse. Panelists will speak about the management and evolution of their own processes, and will address challenges and perceived barriers to participation.

MLS Resume & Cover Letter Workshop

November 14th // 6 – 7pm

Join SLA-SG, SALS and ALA-SC for a Resume and Coverletter Workshop! We will be meeting in Room LI030. The presentation portion of the workshop should go for about 45 minutes to an hour, with some time to follow for group review/individual questions.
L.P. Ailes and Ellen Rodkey will be presenting and should be able to provide some more individual consultation at the end!

MACDG + VRA Midwest Chapter Meeting

October 28th + 29th

SALS + the FAL will be hosting the Midwestern Art Cataloging Discussion Group (MACDG) and the VRA Midwest Chapter this fall. MACDG is a loosely organized group of librarians who meet at least once a year. Anyone interested in art and architecture or visual resources cataloging is welcome to attend. MACDG’s meeting will take place on Saturday, the 29th at 1pm EST.  The VRA Midwest fall meeting will be on Friday at 1pm EST, and we plan on providing the option of connecting remotely for members unable to attend in person. Tours of the Sidney + Lois Eskenazi Museum of Art and the Mathers Museum have been put in place, as well as presentations on Photogrammetry & 3D Object Creation and Artist Book Cataloging.

First Thursdays
October 6th // 5-7:30 pm

SALS will have a booth set up at the First Thursdays festival for October. First Thursdays is a celebration of contemporary arts & humanities on the IU Bloomington campus.  The festival is free and open to all members of the public, with performances and activities around the Showalter Arts Plaza from 5 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., followed by featured evening events at venues across campus. SALS will be selling buttons, baked goods and zines!

Call-Out Meeting
September 2nd

We’ll be meeting in the East Tower of Wells in Room 157J Everyone is welcome to attend, even if you’re unsure about officially joining just yet. We’ll be having snacks and chatting about some of the activities we want to put together this semester (including tours, trips, exhibitions, presentations, collaborations, etc). This is a great opportunity to get to know your peers and network, as well as explore the field of art librarianship.

Social Hour // Downtown Adventure
August 19Come explore some of Bloomington’s best social spots with SALS, ALA, PLG, SLA, and SAA on Friday, August 19, starting at The Atlas Bar at 7pm! Unwind after orientation, eat some free pizza! We’ll be visiting three different Bloomington gems throughout the night starting at the Atlas then off to the Bishop, and the Root Cellar.Student Professional Association Panel
August 18Interested in learning more about SALS and/or other student professional associations in the ILS Department?! Join us on Thursday, August 18th at the 11:30 AM Student Panel in Room 033 in Wells.


SALS  End of Semester Meeting
May 6th

Our last meeting of Spring semester! We will be meeting in the Fine Arts Building at 5:00 pm. We will have snacks and chat about ideas for future activities and events, including tours, trips, exhibitions, presentations, collaborations, etc.


April 9th & 10th

We will be heading to St. Louis to meet with a librarian at WashU’s Art and Architecture Library. SALS will also be visiting the St. Louis Art museum, Laumeier Sculpture Park and Mildred Lane Kemper Art Museum!

SALS x Professional Development Day
April 3rd

Two of our members will be presenting on topics such as business cards, starting and/or maintaining your online presence and networking. We will be meeting at 3:00 pm in the large computer lab classroom (Room 002). After presentations, stick around so y’all can work on your LinkedIn profiles or blogs or business cards. Let’s bring all our skills together and collaborate on professional development.

March 26th

SALS will be virtually watching the DERAIL (Diversity, Equity, Race, Accessibility, and Identity in LIS) forum is a student-led event initiated to address the need for critical discussions of the intersections between social justice issues and our roles as students and information professionals. DERAIL will be held on March 26, 2016, beginning at 10:00 AM (EST) at Simmons College in Boston, MA.

ARLIS/NA + VRA Annual Conference
March 8th – 12th

A few members of SALS will be attending the Art Libraries Society of North America and Visual Resources Association 2016 joint conference in Seattle, WA.

Art+Feminism Wikipedia Edit-a-thon!
March 5th

As part of the Art+Feminism campaign to improve coverage of women and the arts on Wikipedia, the Indiana University Bloomington Libraries are hosting an edit-a-thon meetup. The event will focus on expanding or improving Wikipedia entries for notable women artists, including women artists from the state of Indiana. Activities will also include new editor orientation and training.

Zine + Button Sale!
March 4th

SALS will be selling zines, buttons and baked goods at the I FELL Gallery next to Rainbow Bakery from 5-8pm!

Amos Kennedy Closing Reception
February 26th

Please join us on Friday, February 26 from 5-6:30 pm at the Fine Arts Library exhibit area for a closing reception for, Prints and Artists’ Books from Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr., Printmaker: A Selection from the Fine Arts Library. Exhibit curator, Vaughan Hennen, will speak briefly about the life and work of Amos Paul Kennedy, Jr. Members of the Black Graduate Student Association will also share remarks.

February 22nd

SALS members took a behind the scenes look at Indiana University’s Art Museum. They spoke with the Registrar and viewed special items that are a part of the museum’s paper collection.

INDY Trip 
February 21st

SALS traveled to Indianapolis for the day. They met up with Alba Fernandez-Keys, the head of libraries & archives at the Indianapolis Museum of Art. SALS members also toured the Indianapolis Children’s Museum.

Call-out Meeting

On September 1st SALS hosted its first event – an open meeting in the ILS Computer Lab lounge. We had snacks and chatted with students interested in art librarianship and other related subjects.
