Upcoming workshops from the Fine Arts Library:
The Law of Artistic Appropriation for Visual Artists: From Jeff Koons to Richard Prince
Copyright law has developed over the past 25 years to allow for greater use of appropriation in the some areas of artistic creativity, such as the visual arts, while becoming more restrictive in others, such as music. This workshop will survey the use of appropriation in the visual arts and examine the development of the legal concept of fair use as “transformativeness” in a series of legal cases involving the work of artists Jeff Koons and Richard Prince. The session, which is sponsored by the IU Libraries, will be led by Jasmine Burns (Image Technologies and Visual Literacy Librarian) and Naz Pantaloni, JD, PhD (Copyright Program Librarian).
